In the previous post, we discussed Telugu weddings  and what happens during the event.  In the Telugu tradition, post-wedding customs are as grand as the pre-wedding ones. The new Tanishq wedding collection for the Telugu bride brings the ancient traditions to life and also lets you create some of your own. With Tanishq, Hum har shaadi ke liye tayaar hain!

After the marriage, the bride is formally welcomed into the Groom’s house. This is called Gruhapravesam of the bride. A solution of Lime and turmeric is mixed on a plate and circled around the couple & thrown away. This is to ward of any evil. Kumkum from the gold KumKum box is applied on the foreheads of both the Bride & the Groom. Applying Kumkum in the parting of the Bride’s hair is also a symbol of the marital status of a Hindu woman.

After the Gruhapravesam, the Mangalsutra is united. The elderly people in the family unite the two Maṅgaḷasūtraṃ on a common thread sixteen days post wedding. Some black beads are added in between the Maṅgaḷasūtraṃ so that they do not collide. The unison of Maṅgaḷasūtraṃs signifies the peace and harmony between the two families. The Maṅgaḷasūtraṃ signifies the Mangalya Dharanam, which in Sanskrit means “wearing the auspicious” jewellery. This helps identify her as a married woman. The common designs include the Lakshmi thaali, pustelu worn by the Telugus. The rest of the evening is spent in playing traditional games.

Post wedding celebrations, jewellery plays a vital role in the life of the bride. Gold is looked upon as a symbol of purity, prosperity and good fortune. The wedding jewellery is seen as exclusive property of the bride, the groom’s family continues to add to her trousseau at festivals. Traditionally, these gifts of jewellery acted as insurance for her during difficult times.

Wedding jewellery can be used on numerous occasions owing to other weddings of friends and family. Whether it is wearing jewellery that has been passed down over the years from mother to daughter or new jewellery that you have recently purchased, you can always adorn your favourite jewellery to weddings and look extra special for the festivals that dot the calendar.
